It all began when Taylor Swift stole the spotlight with that AMAZING performance of her latest hit, ” Out Of The Woods”.  Her vocals were highly commendable. It left us awe-struck. D-uh, it’s Taylor Swift. What did you expect?

The Weeknd spread philosophical vibes after that jaw-dropping performance which got him a standing ovation. You must be living on a another planet if you haven’t seen it yet.

The 58th GRAMMY Awards - Show

This was certainly the year of many tributes to all the great artists who made the music industry what it is today.

Stars John Legend, Demi Lovato, Luke Bryan, Meghan Trainor and Tyrese Gibson clubbed together to perform the most memorable tribute to Lionel Ritchie. After that we got a little  rendition of ” All Night Long“,by none other than the master himself!

Let the music play on, play on, play on, play on…!!

The Eagles presented a tribute to the late Glenn Frey. They are still one the greatest and most iconic groups of all time.the-eagles-grammys-2016

And for the best, of the best, Lady Gaga’s tribute to late (and the great) David Bowie made heads’ turn! Her electric personality and funky dance moves in addition to her Bowie costume made her the queen of the night.

Kendrick Lamar’s theatrical performance brought tears to our eyes. Portraying an unjust society, he rendered his support to Racial Equality with that earth-shattering performance. Way to go King Kendrick.

Song Of The Day# 8

Pehla Nasha

1298143948

This song no doubt takes every person on a fantasy ride every time it is played. The lyrics are simply one of kind. If you are in this new phase of beginning to love and being loved you cannot connect more to anything else. Music of this brilliant track composed by Jatin-Lalit. Voices of Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam in this song makes it a super duper hit song and is loved by every lover as it touches heart with its amazing wordings which are penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. I feel that there are two types of music. One that sticks to your head when released, heard a million times and then just a distant memory. While others stay with you and you simply can never get bored of it. This one is surely in the second category. It has begun a revolution in its own way.

Song Of The Day #7

Jet Black Heart – 5 Seconds of Summer

5 Seconds of Summer is the new hot thing in the music industry now. They stole our hearts with singles like She Looks So Perfect and Don’t Stop in their last album. This obviously means high expectations for their latest album, Sounds Good Feels Good. And I am glad to say that they have lived up to their expectations.

Jet Black Heart is their third single from their latest album. And God, have they done justice. The first two singles were peppy party like songs. With Jet Black Heart, they show that a) Micheal can sing everything and b) they can do all kinds of music. The words of this song get to me the most. And the sincerity in Luke’s voice is just too overwhelming for my weak heart! Calum as usual, strikes the right chord and Ashton  reminds us why he is the best drummer right now.

The music is as beautiful. Full of all the pure rock elements that one would look for in such a song. The guitar, the words, the drums, all of it. Its perfect.

Even the music video is beautiful. It manages to capture the sense of what they try to convey in the words in a manner that has never been done before. Instead of showing distressed teenagers battling with parents, they show distressed teenagers expressing their feelings. Which is good. I guess…

Listen to the song anyway. Because it sounds good. And feels good.5sos-jet-black-heart-2

Coldplay: A Poem

With a head full of dreams
The Scientist comes to me
And sees a sky full of stars
Where every tear is a waterfall
And with that everglow
He calls it magic
Because he sees the trick
And as he closes his eyes
He says
“This could be Paradise

Song of the Day#6

“Nobody said it was easy,

No one ever said it would be this hard”

maxresdefault3Ever wondered why this song was called The Scientist when you initially assumed that it was related to actual science?

The Scientist” by Coldplay, released in  2002, is still one amongst the chartbusters. For those of you who enjoy those slow, sappy, mushy love songs, then this one is for you.
The song was written collaboratively by all the band members for the album, has been a permanent fixture in the band’s live set lists since 2002.
It was a sensational release and it stayed on the top of the Billboards for couple of years.  Personally it’s one of my favorites. It gushes blood to my brain, the moment it is played! And let’s be real, not many songs can do that 🙂 Some songs just click and then..BAAM! It’s on repeat.

In no time,it became the song chanted by most teenagers and young adults alike, just like the kollaveri song (if u know what I mean!). So tune in when you are down and I’m pretty sure this boost you up 🙂

Controversy behind ‘Hymn For The Weekend’

Coldplay’s latest album A Head Full Of Dreams features their latest hit, Hymn For the Weekend. The song, by itself, is a true master piece. What with Beyonce’s strong vocals, the continuous beat in the background, and of course, the words. Such beauty. The chorus itself makes such a strong impact to the whole song that even though the verses are a little weird, it makes up for it.

2015Coldplay_JuliaKennedy_Press_101115.hero

Boy, who knew that this would become an ardent source of controversy. The song is a work of art (no pun intended).

The controversy involves multiple questions from the portrayal of India to the appearance of Sonam Kapoor.

Portrayal of India

We are pretty aware of India being a colorful and diverse country. However, is the diversity portrayed justifiably? Some think not. According to some journalists, the portrayal of the religion Hinduism alone, is questionable . With various shots of Hindu deities, some believe that this is a promo video for the RSS party’s principles! Only the orange shall prevail. They cry, ” Where did all the minorities go?”. Some go against this argument, deeming it to be redundant, and plainly stating that the country is a Hindu majority, therefore offering their support to the video. Do they intend to make India a theocratic state is a big debate that is inciting wars within the country.

Coldplay-Hymn-For-The-Weekend-video-640x352

Secondly, many Indians were unhappy with the scenic shots of the city. There were many who felt that foreign filmmakers tend to show a more depressing side of  the Third World Countries, whereas the occasional pub and discotheque scenes are showcased in multiple videos in their respective countries.  With numerous scenes displaying the slums and that candid scene in an old theatre, it is rather stereotypical. However, the festival of Holi, where one can witness the enthusiasm of color and all things fun, is beautifully depicted thus rendering this argument as meaningless.

Beyoncé was stunning as usual. However, many felt that one of her costumes was nowhere close to representing Indian culture. Well, we certainly would like to know  what the fashion experts have to say about this.

The appearance of Sonam Kapoor

sonam-kapoor-music-video.jpg

Sonam Kapoor is delight to watch on-screen. Unfortunately her appearance in the video was a limited period of 5 seconds, thus making her the butt of all jokes.  Memes, tweets and gags about her appearance being equivalent to her father ( Anil Kapoor)’s appearance in the fourth installment of the Mission Impossible franchise had taken the internet by storm. Ironically, Sonam has been rather happy with her appearance and she has also  been bestowed with V.I.P passes to all of the band’s concerts.

What a burnnnnnn……

Despite all the tussle and politics, the band’s enthusiasm to choose India as a location to shoot the video is awesome, considering the fact that they possess a massive fan base here.  We hope to see them more often in the country, but after all that speculation, it is a BIG QUESTION?

The Best Composers of Hollywood

What makes a movie phenomenal ?It’s not just the acting ,the set-design or the special effects. It’s also the score. The BeatFreaks give you a list of the geniuses( in alphabetical order) , who’s scores and compositions made these films, box-office successes. Not only are the tunes catchy but they also depict the emotion required to enhance the acting.

Alan Silvestri

Alan_Silvestri_2009.jpg

You would definitely know this man. He is best known for his work in Forrest Gump, Captain America: The First Avenger and Marvel’s The Avengers. This man knows how to make the tunes work! He started off as a composer for a TV show CHiPS. Then he met with the producer Robert Zemeckis and started to compose for movies. The way he uses the music to define the emotion of a particular scene is fascinating.
Silvestri has received two Academy Award nominations, one for Best Original Score for Forrest Gump (1994) and one for Best Original Song for ” Believe” on The Polar Express. He also received two Golden Globe nominations: Best Score for Forrest Gump and Best Song for The Polar Express.

He has also received four Grammy Award nominations, winning two awards – Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media, for “Believe” from The Polar Express in 2004 and Best Instrumental Composition, for “Cast Away End Credits” from the film Cast Away in 2002. His other nomination was for Best Soundtrack Album, for Back to the Future.

Alexandre Desplat

Alexandre_Desplat_2015

French Composer, Alexandre Desplat is one of the most renowned composers of the 21st century. One of the reason’s that we decided to add him onto the list was because his score on the film, The Grand Budapest Hotel which was absolutely phenomenal . Desplat takes references from South American and African music. His musical interests include a wide range of world music, various french compositions and jazz. He began composing music for several french films and soon switched to Hollywood movies.

Some of his best works include: The Queen, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Fantastic Mr.Fox, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part-1 and Part-2, Rise of the Guardians and Zero Dark Thirty.

Desplat has been nominated for many awards, such as the Academy Awards, The Golden Globes, The BAFTA’s and the Grammy’s. I think my favorite score of his was the main theme of the film, The Imitation Game. The subtle beginning soon evolves into a forte of deep;strong emotion, slowly moving back to the delicate piano. It just builds with emotion all the way.

Brian Tyler

Brian_Tyler_Conducts_2011_I

Brian Tyler is the composer for movies like Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, and many many more. His first break came when he composed for the film, Frality. After that, he just kept getting better year after year.

Brian Tyler has this amazing capability to bring out all the elements of the movie into the music. you would guess what kind of movie it was going to be just by listening to his sound track. That is really cool. He was nominated for many awards and won many more. I won’t list them out now because the list is so damn huge!!!

But seriously, listen to the score of the movies too, because it’s like the back bone of the movie and it would just sound horrible without any. 🙂

John Williams

Johnwilliams2006.JPG

John Williams is no stranger to anyone in the music industry. I pretty much knew him as the guy that composed the theme music for the legendary Star Wars franchise. According to many, John Williams is known for neoromanticism in his compositions. For those of you who don’t know, Neo romanticism is basically, returning to the emotional expression of nineteenth century music. Just like many, Williams initially composed music for television shows. His first film composition was for the film Daddy-O which was considered to be his debut in the music scene.

Some of his best scores include Valley of the Dolls, Fiddler On The Roof, Star Wars: Luke’s Theme, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones series and the first three Harry Potter films ( Hedwig’s Theme)

A winner of five Academy Awards, four Golden Globes, seven BAFTA’s and 22 Grammy;s he is definitely one of Hollywood’s best!

Thomas Newman

Thomas_Newman.jpg

Thomas Newman is an award-winning composer for multiple Hollywood films. The reason that he is on our top five list is that his music is truly genius.

Initially, Newman was interested in  composing for musical theatre. He worked in multiple Broadway shows, before he  decided to work  on composing for  films. He worked with John Williams, who was a friend of his father, Alfred Newman, on the Star Wars Franchise: Return Of The Jedi, in the scene where Darth Vader dies. In 1992, He composed music for the Academy award nominated film- Scent Of A Woman. Soon his work was in demand. Movies like  The Shawshank Redemption, Little Women, The Green Mile, Finding Nemo and  Wall-E are some his greatest works.

Newman is a recipient of several awards including , three Golden Globes and a winner of two BAFTA’s, six Grammy’s and an EMMY. He has been nominated for thirteen Academy Awards but has never received one! This year he has been nominated for Best Original Score for the film Bridge Of Spies. I really do hope he bags it this time!

‘Stuck In Head’ Syndrome

Every once in a while you get a song stuck in your head. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a new song, or a song that has the “stuck in head syndrome” in the past, but it just happens. It doesn’t even have to be a song you like! Sometimes it’s those annoying jingles and tunes that get the syndrome. This time I’ve been lucky, because unlike last time (when it was the ID card song that the SRM students made), the syndrome has brought along Sia’s Elastic Heart!  It started one day, on the odd occasion that I went to class when Shrav and I began humming in class and arrived at Elastic Heart! The song has grown on me more and more and its almost a life goal now to have thick skin and an elastic heart 😉
Share your ‘Stuck In Head’ syndrome experiences with us! Let’s see if we can find a winner for-

1) Most Annoying
2) Mood vs Song inconvenience
3) Most Catchy; and
4) Most common syndrome

IMG_20160122_104823

Nice view to do dishes with the syndrome eh?!
