What makes a movie phenomenal ?It’s not just the acting ,the set-design or the special effects. It’s also the score. The BeatFreaks give you a list of the geniuses( in alphabetical order) , who’s scores and compositions made these films, box-office successes. Not only are the tunes catchy but they also depict the emotion required to enhance the acting.
Alan Silvestri
You would definitely know this man. He is best known for his work in Forrest Gump, Captain America: The First Avenger and Marvel’s The Avengers. This man knows how to make the tunes work! He started off as a composer for a TV show CHiPS. Then he met with the producer Robert Zemeckis and started to compose for movies. The way he uses the music to define the emotion of a particular scene is fascinating.
Silvestri has received two Academy Award nominations, one for Best Original Score for Forrest Gump (1994) and one for Best Original Song for ” Believe” on The Polar Express. He also received two Golden Globe nominations: Best Score for Forrest Gump and Best Song for The Polar Express.
He has also received four Grammy Award nominations, winning two awards – Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media, for “Believe” from The Polar Express in 2004 and Best Instrumental Composition, for “Cast Away End Credits” from the film Cast Away in 2002. His other nomination was for Best Soundtrack Album, for Back to the Future.
Alexandre Desplat
French Composer, Alexandre Desplat is one of the most renowned composers of the 21st century. One of the reason’s that we decided to add him onto the list was because his score on the film, The Grand Budapest Hotel which was absolutely phenomenal . Desplat takes references from South American and African music. His musical interests include a wide range of world music, various french compositions and jazz. He began composing music for several french films and soon switched to Hollywood movies.
Some of his best works include: The Queen, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Fantastic Mr.Fox, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part-1 and Part-2, Rise of the Guardians and Zero Dark Thirty.
Desplat has been nominated for many awards, such as the Academy Awards, The Golden Globes, The BAFTA’s and the Grammy’s. I think my favorite score of his was the main theme of the film, The Imitation Game. The subtle beginning soon evolves into a forte of deep;strong emotion, slowly moving back to the delicate piano. It just builds with emotion all the way.
Brian Tyler
Brian Tyler is the composer for movies like Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, and many many more. His first break came when he composed for the film, Frality. After that, he just kept getting better year after year.
Brian Tyler has this amazing capability to bring out all the elements of the movie into the music. you would guess what kind of movie it was going to be just by listening to his sound track. That is really cool. He was nominated for many awards and won many more. I won’t list them out now because the list is so damn huge!!!
But seriously, listen to the score of the movies too, because it’s like the back bone of the movie and it would just sound horrible without any. 🙂
John Williams
John Williams is no stranger to anyone in the music industry. I pretty much knew him as the guy that composed the theme music for the legendary Star Wars franchise. According to many, John Williams is known for neoromanticism in his compositions. For those of you who don’t know, Neo romanticism is basically, returning to the emotional expression of nineteenth century music. Just like many, Williams initially composed music for television shows. His first film composition was for the film Daddy-O which was considered to be his debut in the music scene.
Some of his best scores include Valley of the Dolls, Fiddler On The Roof, Star Wars: Luke’s Theme, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones series and the first three Harry Potter films ( Hedwig’s Theme)
A winner of five Academy Awards, four Golden Globes, seven BAFTA’s and 22 Grammy;s he is definitely one of Hollywood’s best!
Thomas Newman
Thomas Newman is an award-winning composer for multiple Hollywood films. The reason that he is on our top five list is that his music is truly genius.
Initially, Newman was interested in composing for musical theatre. He worked in multiple Broadway shows, before he decided to work on composing for films. He worked with John Williams, who was a friend of his father, Alfred Newman, on the Star Wars Franchise: Return Of The Jedi, in the scene where Darth Vader dies.
